INTRODUCTION:- It is a group of mental disorders characterized by disturbances in thought process, perception to things, behavior, and communication with society. Deterioration of mental function results in difficulty in self-care, work, and social relationships. The patient is unable to maintain pace with their surroundings. He gradually becomes isolated from society.
The patient shows typical set of symptoms like
a) Delusions -unfounded beliefs in certain things.
b) Hallucinations -perception (feeling) of things from various senses like hearing, taste, vision, smell; which are absent in reality.
c) Incoherence (not understandable) -without logical connection- abnormal behavior.
d) Flat affect-an appearance or mood that shows no emotion.
CAUSES:-
This disease is caused due to defect in genetics of the person. Disturbance in genes lead to production of defected neurotransmitters which results in various disturbed mental expressions like delusion, hallucination, mood swing etc. Genetic factors play important role, as close relatives of a person with schizophrenia are more likely to develop the disorder. Psychological and social factors, such as disturbed family and interpersonal relationships, may also play a role in development of this disease.
TYPES OF SCHIZOPHRENIA:-
1) Catatonic
2)Paranoid
3) Disorganized
4) Undifferentiated
5) Residual
No single characteristic is present in all types of schizophrenia.
SYMPTOMS:-
# Stupor (confusion of mind)
# Negativism (become pessimist)
# Unable to take care of personal needs
# Decreased sensitivity to painful stimulus
# Delusional thoughts of a persecution (attack on him)
# Anxiety, depression, anger, violence are common
# Incoherent thinking with no logical connection(non understandable thoughts)
# Behavior disturbance (abnormal)
# No expression on face
# Inappropriate laughter (not on proper place)
# Delusions, hallucinations, multiple personality disorder become prominent
# In severe cases, Social withdrawal is prominent.
TESTS TO BE DONE:-
Set of symptoms indicate this disease. But confirm diagnosis is difficult.
CT scan of the head may reveal enlarged ventricles in the brain.
HOMOEOPATHIC TREATMENT:-
In modern science homoeopathy emphasis is given on removal of cause rather than management of symptoms only. In Homoeopathy there is no antipsychotic medicine or sleeping pills because homoeopathy do not treat the disease but it treat the patient.
